A Portable Theatre (2012-2016 )
Geoffrey Nelson was a Founder and the Artistic Director of A Portable Theatre, a professional theatrical touring company based in Central Ohio that operated from 2012-2016.
APT began touring in 2013 with a production of The Duck Variations by David Mamet and followed that show in 2014 with Pierce to the Soul by Chiquita Mullins Lee and Talking Heads by Alan Bennett. Tales from the Grave, Nelson’s adaptation of three classic ghost stories into a Live Radio Drama format (complete with live sound effects and commercials) opened in 2015 as well as Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) by Michael Carleton, Jim Fitzgerald and John K. Alvarez. The sixth and final production by the company, A Picasso by Jeffrey Hatcher, was performed in 2016.
With the death of Board President Cheri Mitchell in 2015 and the departure from Ohio of Founder/Artistic Director Nelson in 2016, the APT Board decided to cease operations. Remaining assets of the company were donated to a special fund at the Columbus Foundation, to be used over a ten-year period to make grants to other professional theatres in central Ohio.
