Geoffrey Nelson
Producing
Geoffrey Nelson has served as an Artistic Director with nonprofit theatres for almost three decades. He began in the summer of 1980, as the AD of Weathervane Playhouse, a professional summer stock theatre in Newark, Ohio.
In 1984, he was one of the founders of CATCO, the Contemporary American Theatre Company, in Columbus, Ohio. Nelson served as its Artistic Director for 26 seasons, leading CATCO’s growth from a small alternative company into Central Ohio’s leading professional theatre, operating under a contract with Actors Equity Association. Geoff produced more than 200 plays during his years with CATCO.
In 2012, Nelson co-founded A Portable Theatre, a small professional company dedicated to touring in Ohio. To date, APT has produced four plays featuring all-Equity casts.
In each position, Nelson has been responsible for selecting seasons, negotiating contracts, casting, supervising all the productions (as well as directing many of them) and has had a major role in board development, marketing, public relations, grant-writing, fundraising and many other administrative functions.
